Diogo Jota missed training as a precaution; set to be assessed ahead of Liverpool vs Bologna
Diogo Jota provided an assist in Liverpool's 2-1 win at Wolves last weekend
Diogo Jota missed training on Tuesday as Liverpool continue their preparations for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Bologna at Anfield.
The Portugal international sat out the session at Kirkby as a precaution after sustaining a heavy blow to his foot during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over his former club, Wolves.
The 27-year-old will be assessed further ahead of the Serie A side’s visit, as the Reds aim to build on their 3-1 win against AC Milan in their Champions League opener.
Fellow attacker Federico Chiesa was also absent from Tuesday’s training, but Darwin Nunez and Andy Robertson participated.
Nunez missed the match at Molineux due to illness but is back in contention to face Bologna.
Robertson, who limped off after a heavy challenge late in the previous match, is fit and available for selection.
The only other player missing from Liverpool’s squad at the moment is Harvey Elliott
Eliott is expected to be sidelined until the end of the month due to an injury sustained while on international duty with the England U21s in September.
With Diogo Jota potentially carrying a slight injury, Nunez may have another opportunity to impress the coaching staff.
Earlier this season, Slot outlined his expectations for the Uruguayan number nine.
“Bring him as much as we can into scoring positions,” Slot said.
“I think every individual benefits from team performance.
“If we, as a team, can bring our attackers – not only him, but also the other ones – as much as we can into dangerous positions, these players will score goals.
“That’s also what we’ve seen in pre-season, where we even scored goals out of smaller chances.
“So it’s up to us to bring him, or Diogo or other attackers, as much as we can into promising positions for them.
“And then he, like all the others, will score the goals.”
Wednesday’s match will mark the first meeting between Liverpool and Bologna, with the latter set to be Liverpool’s 137th different opponent in European competitions.
A victory would make Arne Slot the first Liverpool manager in history to achieve eight wins in his first nine matches in charge.
