Wojciech Szczesny joins Barcelona on free transfer
Wojciech Szczesny joins the club until June 30, 2025
Barcelona have reached an agreement with Wojciech Szczesny for the goalkeeper to join the club until June 30, 2025.
The Polish keeper arrives at the club under unusual circumstances.
Throughout his career, which seemed to be winding down last summer, Szczesny has played for top clubs including Arsenal, AS Roma, and Juventus after leaving his hometown of Warsaw at the age of 16.
During his time in London with Arsenal, following a loan spell at Brentford, Szczesny established himself as the starting goalkeeper and won two FA Cups and a Community Shield with the Gunners.
His successful stint in the Premier League led to a move to Italy, where he joined AS Roma and solidified his reputation as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in European football.
Szczęsny then transferred to Juventus in 2017, where he replaced the legendary Gianluigi Buffon.
Over seven seasons with la Vecchia Signora, he won three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies, and three Italian Super Cups.
In total, he has made over 500 professional appearances, including 75 in the UEFA Champions League.
On the international stage, Szczęsny has earned 84 caps for the Polish national team, featuring in two World Cups and four European Championships.
“I gave the game 18 years of my life, every day, without excuses,” Szczesny said in a social media post confirming his retirement earlier this year.
“Today, though my body still feels ready for challenges, my heart is not there anymore
“I feel that right now it is time to give all of my attention to my family.”
Peña, who made 17 first-team appearances last season while Ter Stegen was sidelined with a back injury, stepped in to replace the Germany international when he was substituted during the match against Villarreal.
The 25-year-old retained his starting position for Wednesday’s 1-0 La Liga victory over Getafe at the Olympic Stadium and the subsequent 4-2 defeat to Osasuna on Saturday.
