Arne Slot is set to assess Federico Chiesa’s fitness before deciding on his inclusion in Liverpool’s squad for the weekend trip to Crystal Palace.

The forward missed the Reds’ Champions League victory over Bologna in midweek due to an injury concern but is expected to resume training on Friday afternoon.

Slot will evaluate Chiesa’s condition later today to determine if he can be part of the travelling party to Selhurst Park for Saturday’s Premier League fixture.

Slot told his pre-match press conference: “[It’s] wait and see.

“He didn’t train for the last two days.

“He came in today to see if he could train and if he can I still have a decision to make because we can only select 20 [players] and he hasn’t trained for a few days.

“But first of all, we have to wait and see if he can even train – and if he can then it’s our decision if we bring him to the game or not.”

Chiesa impressed on his full Liverpool debut, contributing an assist in the 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over West Ham United.

Speaking after the game, Arne Slot said: “It was pleasing to see that he (Federico Chiesa) could already play 60 minutes because I think I said in the last press conference he hasn’t played a lot, maybe hasn’t played hardly any minutes in the last three or four months.

“So, for him it is important that apart from getting more match fitness, he has to have playing minutes – and that’s what he got today.

“He assisted, although it was a shot on target that provided Diogo for a goal, worked really hard and I think it is normal he is not already in the top of his ability.

“He has to get used to the club, he has to get used to his teammates, he has to adjust to the playing style.

“It was very good to see how match fit he already is so we can use him if we need him.”
