Liverpool have officially informed the Brazilian FA that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will not be available for their upcoming October international fixtures.
Brazil are set to face Chile and Peru in crucial World Cup qualifiers, but they will do so without their first-choice goalkeeper.
Alisson was forced off during Liverpool’s recent victory over Crystal Palace, having limped off in the second half after sustaining an injury.
The 32-year-old signaled discomfort immediately and was unable to continue, prompting Liverpool to substitute in Vitezslav Jaros, who made his senior debut for the Reds.
Following the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot gave a grim update on Alisson’s condition, hinting at a potentially lengthy absence.
According to Brazilian media outlet Globo, the situation has since been confirmed, with Brazil’s national team calling up Weverton as a replacement.
Brazil’s medical team had reached out to Liverpool after the match and were informed that Alisson would not be fit to participate in the upcoming internationals.
Weverton, the 36-year-old Palmeiras goalkeeper, has 10 international caps, with his last appearance coming in 2023 in a friendly against Morocco, where he played the full 90 minutes.
Brazil have struggled in their World Cup qualification campaign, securing just one point from four matches in 2023.
Their recent defeat to Paraguay in September leaves them with 10 points from eight games, putting their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
“The fixtures are difficult but I have also felt how difficult Wolves away is and how difficult Crystal Palace away is,” Slot told TNT Sports.
“We will probably not be as dominant as we were today when we face Arsenal away but both fixtures are difficult.
“But it’s very good that we won these games and it’s up to us to show ourselves in the big games as well.
“Unfortunately Ali won’t be with us in those matches I assume, if I saw how he walked off the pitch.”
Slot also praised Jaros, who stepped up in goal due to Caoimhin Kelleher’s illness.
“Really good,” the Dutchman said. “He had a good season and he won the league and cup with the team [Sturm Graz] in Austria [last season].
“He wanted to go [back this season] and have playing time.
“We said at a club like this we need a good third goalkeeper as well.
“It was a nice moment for him to make his debut for Liverpool.”
