How Liverpool had planned behind-closed-doors game for Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez will now be able play for Uruguay ahead of their upcoming fixtures as things stand

Liverpool had initially planned for a behind-closed-doors match during the international break, but Darwin Nunez is now available for Uruguay’s upcoming fixtures.

The Reds striker had been suspended for five games following his involvement in the Copa America chaos after Uruguay’s semi-final exit to Colombia in July.

Nunez was one of several players who rushed into the stands after trouble broke out between fans at the end of the match at Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina.

Last month, he received a ban for his part in the unsavoury scenes.

However, on Friday night, it was reported that the Uruguay Football Federation successfully appealed the verdict through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

This appeal has provisionally cleared Nunez to participate in the World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador this month, although there remains a possibility he could still miss these matches.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had considered arranging a behind-closed-doors match to keep his non-international players sharp, a situation from which Nunez would have benefited.

However, with the appeal resolved, Darwin Nunez joins his national team in the hope of contributing to their upcoming matches.

Speaking on Friday, before the overturning of the ban was reported, the Liverpool boss revealed: “I would have preferred him to go because I think it is always good for a player to go to his national team, they like to see their team-mates again.

“He would have probably played two games, at least one but I think both because he is a starter over there and like you guys are telling me constantly, he hasn’t started that much over here.

“It would have been good for him to get some playing time there.

“Now we will try to find a way of finding playing time over here for him or training time.

“Ideally for me he would have gone over there.

“I don’t think it is a good thing for a player being suspended.

“It’s a good thing for a player to go and see his team-mates, get energy over there, get some playing time.

“We’re working on that (behind-closed-doors fixture).”
