Caoimhin Kelleher has been advised to leave Liverpool after being regarded as comparable to first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Following Alisson’s hamstring injury late in the Reds’ 1-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, Kelleher is set for an extended run in the starting lineup.
However, the long-term future of the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international is in doubt.
This uncertainty comes after Liverpool agreed to a £30 million deal in August to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for the next season.
Kelleher made it clear during the summer that he wanted to secure a number one spot, as Nottingham Forest had bids for him rejected in the last two transfer windows.
Former Ireland centre-back Richard Dunne believes it is time for Kelleher to seek a move away from Liverpool.
“When I watch Caoimhin Kelleher, I don’t notice the difference between him and Alisson,” he said.
“He must make a move away from Anfield for regular football, there’s no question he’s good enough.”
Speaking to BetVictor, Dunne added: “They’ve signed Giorgi Mamardashvili who will come into the side next season, so the writing is on the wall for Kelleher unfortunately.
“Liverpool won’t likely let him leave this season, but he just needs to prove his talent when he gets his chances.
“He’s definitely good enough to be a keeper consistently at the top level.”
Kelleher, who missed the match against Crystal Palace due to illness, is currently with the Ireland squad as they prepare for their UEFA Nations League games against Finland on Thursday and Greece on Sunday.
