Dominik Szoboszlai has shared insight into the crucial changes Arne Slot has implemented at Liverpool since replacing Jurgen Klopp as manager this summer.
The Hungarian midfielder, who has been transformed into a number 10 under Slot’s guidance, has become a regular starter for the Reds, who currently sit one point clear at the top of the Premier League.
Szoboszlai endured a challenging end to last season but is now finding his form, contributing one goal and three assists in nine appearances so far this campaign.
The 23-year-old believes the team’s improvement comes from the increased time on the ball afforded by Slot’s tactical approach, which has instilled a sense of composure and control in the squad.
Speaking about Slot’s style, Szoboszlai emphasized the difference that having more time in possession has made, allowing the players to better execute their game plan.
He also revealed that he has been drawing inspiration from Manchester City’s prolific striker, Erling Haaland, as he continues to evolve in his new attacking role.
“Now we are more on the ball,” said Dominik Szoboszlai.
“We are more calm.
“The players who have a lot of quality, they have time to think about what to do.
“With Jurgen, we would win the ball and go directly to the goal and score, which was actually working.
“But now there is a difference that we have more of the ball, are more calm and build up from behind.
“Jurgen was the 12th man. If he could, he would run on to the pitch and do some tackles or whatever.
“The new manager is more calm. He knows that what we plan will work out somehow if we do it.”
On his close friendship with Man City striker Erling Haaland, he added: “I learned a lot from him because he was more grown than me.
“He is only three months older but it felt like it was three years older.
“He would do stuff that I could never imagine would help me but over time I realised, yes, he is right so I should start.”
