Curtis Jones has received his second call-up to the senior England squad for this month’s international fixtures, following a series of injuries that have affected Lee Carsley’s selection.
Although Jones has made only two starts for Liverpool this season, he has been in the conversation for a senior international call-up for some time.
At 23 years old, he has outgrown the youth system and now has the opportunity to impress at St. George’s Park.
With Morgan Gibbs-White, Ezri Konsa, and Kobbie Mainoo ruled out, Jones and Newcastle’s Tino Livramento have been drafted in as replacements ahead of matches against Greece and Finland.
Curtis Jones joins his Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England camp.
He is very familiar with manager Carsley, as they worked together in the England U21 setup, where Jones was a regular.
Together, they celebrated victory at the 2023 U21 Euros, alongside fellow Liverpool player Harvey Elliott.
Jones arrived at the England camp on Tuesday night, eager to earn his first senior cap over the next week.
His only previous call-up to the senior squad came during the buildup to the Euros this summer, but he did not make Gareth Southgate’s final team.
The Three Lions will host Greece, featuring Kostas Tsimikas, on Thursday before travelling to Helsinki to face Finland on Sunday.
Jones and Alexander-Arnold are expected to return to Liverpool in good time after the fixtures.
Jones made his second start of the season against Crystal Palace over the weekend, following four appearances off the bench, marking a slow start.
After his first start against West Ham last month, Jones reflected on his challenging beginning to the campaign, saying: “I’m just a lad who always wants to play.
“It’s been hard, I’ve had an injury and stuff, but now I’m back and I’m playing games with a smile on my face.”
