Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has dismissed speculation regarding a potential move to Manchester City in the January transfer window.
The Citizens have been linked with the 25-year-old following Rodri’s season-ending ACL injury.
Zubimendi is an international teammate of Rodri’s with Spain and was part of the squad that won Euro 2024 under Luis de la Fuente this summer.
He also attracted interest from Liverpool in the summer, with the Reds notifying Sociedad of their intention to activate Zubimendi’s €60million (£50.2million) release clause.
However, the midfielder rejected a switch to the Premier League, choosing instead to remain in the Basque Country, and his stance appears unchanged.
Despite the departures of Robin Le Normand and Mikel Merino seeking new challenges this summer, Sociedad received a boost when Zubimendi – a lifelong fan of the club – decided to stay at the Reale Arena.
When questioned about a possible move to Manchester City in January, Zubimendi reiterated that he believes Sociedad is the “best solution” for him at this stage of his career.
As per COPE, the midfielder said “Until now I have thought that the best thing for me was to be at the club,” referring to Real Sociedad.
Zubimendi has made a strong start at Real Sociedad, featuring in nine matches and scoring a goal.
However, that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from spinning.
Zubimendi now has the opportunity to shine on the international stage with Spain, where impressive performances are unlikely to quell the interest from many of the world’s top clubs.
The 25-year-old has yet to sign a new contract with Sociedad, making him a prime target for Man City.
Earlier this summer, Liverpool made an unsuccessful attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi, with the Spain international opting to remain at Real Sociedad for another season.
The midfielder, whose contract runs until 2027, was a key figure in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.
