Southgate has been widely linked with a move to Old Trafford

Gareth Southgate has effectively ruled himself out of contention for the Manchester United managerial position.

The former England manager announced that he will not be pursuing another managerial role for at least a year after stepping down following the Euro 2024 tournament last summer.

Southgate had been widely linked with a move to Old Trafford, given his familiarity with the United hierarchy and the respect he commands from figures like Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Bookmakers had listed Southgate as one of the favorites to take charge should Erik ten Hag be sacked this season.

However, he has squashed those rumors by stating that he requires a complete reset after eight years in charge of the England national team.

Speaking at the European Club Association conference, Gareth Southgate said: “I won’t coach in the next year, for sure.

“I’m certain of that.

“I need to give myself time to make good decisions.

“When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.

‘I’m fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves.

“There’s no rush.”

Gareth Southgate has recently accepted a position as a technical observer for UEFA and has expressed interest in exploring opportunities outside of football management.

It appears he is not ready to take on the pressures associated with a managerial role at this time.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has shown a strong interest in the Manchester United job, should the club decide to part ways with Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the season.

On Tuesday, Manchester United’s top executives held a lengthy seven-hour meeting in London to evaluate Ten Hag’s future after the club recorded its worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

However, no public decision has been made regarding his position. Despite the uncertainty, sources suggest that Ten Hag remains optimistic and is preparing for the upcoming Premier League match against Brentford as usual.

Currently, Manchester United find themselves in 14th place in the league standings, having secured only two victories in their first seven matches.

Their Europa League campaign has also been lackluster, with draws against FC Twente and FC Porto.
