Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui is expected to be sidelined for two months due to a rare heart condition, according to reports.

The Red Devils are experiencing their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, having secured just eight points from their opening seven games.

United’s struggles have been compounded by the injury to £52 million signing Leny Yoro, who has yet to feature this season. Now, the club faces another significant setback with the news regarding Noussair Mazraoui.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reports that the £17 million summer signing has been diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia, which will keep him out of action for the next two months.

Cardiac arrhythmia, also known as an irregular heartbeat, occurs when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or in an irregular pattern.

According to the NHS, arrhythmias affect more than 2 million people in the UK.

Most individuals with an abnormal heart rhythm can lead normal lives if the condition is properly diagnosed.

While it may not always be possible to prevent an arrhythmia from developing, a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of heart conditions.

Heart issues have become a prominent concern in football, with players like Mazraoui’s teammate Christian Eriksen, Sergio Aguero, and Juan Izquierdo all experiencing similar problems.

Three years ago, during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 match against Finland, Eriksen collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The 30-year-old became the first top-flight player to be fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), allowing him to continue his career.

Similarly, former Manchester City star Sergio Aguero was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia after experiencing chest pains during his first start for Barcelona in 2021.

He required medical attention on the pitch after complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath during a match against Alavés.

Initially advised to rest for three months, Aguero ultimately announced his retirement from professional football during a ‘special ceremony’ at the Nou Camp after receiving additional test results.

Aguero described his experience during the game, saying it felt as though he was ‘drowning’ and ‘about to faint,’ noting he had encountered similar issues during training the week before.

Mazraoui’s absence is a significant loss for United and manager Erik ten Hag, particularly considering how well the former Ajax full-back had adapted to life in Manchester.

The 26-year-old featured in all seven of United’s Premier League matches thus far, even contributing an assist during their 2-1 defeat to Brighton in August.
