Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister remained an unused substitute in Argentina’s 1-1 draw against Venezuela on Thursday night.

The World Cup winner has been managing a groin injury, which forced him to leave the field during halftime of the Reds’ 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Despite his condition, the 25-year-old travelled to South America with Lionel Scaloni’s squad for their World Cup qualifying matches against La Vinotinto and Bolivia on Wednesday, October 16.

However, he has yet to participate fully in training with his Argentina teammates and was left on the bench for the draw.

This result keeps the reigning world champions at the top of the COMNEBOL qualifying group, three points ahead of Luis Diaz’s Colombia and four points clear of Uruguay, who are aiming to close the gap.

Mac Allister shared his thoughts on Instagram: “This keeps coming!

“See you in a few days.

“Let’s go Argentina.”

Speaking ahead of their first international match in October, Scaloni revealed that Alexis Mac Allister was following a different training regimen than his teammates.

He said: “Alexis is training differently.

“Let’s see if he is ready for the first game.

“For now he has not been able to train with us and we will make the decision if he is part of the squad or the bench, but today it is difficult for him.

“I think we have to take care of him.

“He is a boy who comes with a lot of games and today the situation is like this.”

The qualifier was incident-packed, as heavy rain in Maturín caused a delay before the players returned to a soaked pitch.

Nicolás Otamendi gave the visitors a perfect start by scoring within 15 minutes, but former Everton striker Salomón Rondón equalised shortly after the hour mark, resulting in both sides settling for a draw.

“It was very difficult, it makes for very ugly matches,” said captain Lionel Messi to TyC after the game.

“We could not complete two passes in a row.

“In the second half we did it on the right a little more, but it is difficult to play like that.

“Very little is played.”
