Alexis Mac Allister was sidelined during Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Venezuela last week due to a groin injury, but in positive news for Liverpool, he has now returned to full training.
Mac Allister was substituted at half-time during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in their final game before the international break.
Despite his injury, he chose to join the Argentina squad, initially training on his own as he continued his recovery.
This meant he could not participate in the first of two World Cup qualifiers this month.
His inclusion in the squad drew scrutiny, especially considering his importance to Arne Slot’s team and the need to manage his workload effectively.
However, Mac Allister has now returned to full training with Argentina, participating in a squad session for the first time on Saturday.
He is in contention to start against Bolivia on Tuesday night.
Reports from Ole indicate that Lionel Scaloni can now consider the 25-year-old a viable option for the match.
There is hope that caution will continue to be exercised with Mac Allister, but this seems likely, given that his training has been tailored throughout the break.
While he was previously seen as a doubt for Liverpool’s upcoming match against Chelsea on October 20, barring any further issues, he is now expected to be available.
This is a significant boost for Slot, as Mac Allister is one of only three players to have featured in all 10 games for the Reds so far this season.
Five players have started nine matches, including him, alongside Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Ryan Gravenberch.
The midfielder has thrived in a more advanced role this season after spending much of his first year at the club as Jurgen Klopp’s No. 6, and he expressed his enthusiasm for the new system in a press conference earlier this month.
“Maybe last season I played most of the year as a six, so my position is quite different,” Alexis Mac Allister told reporters before the 2-0 win over Bologna.
“We try to have a structure and know where our team-mates are going to be but we have our freedom as well.
“Sometimes it could be just Ryan as a six, sometimes a double-six with Dom as a 10. It changes a lot during the game.
“What I can say is I feel really comfortable and I like the idea. I am really enjoying my football.”
