England closing in on Thomas Tuchel as next manager
Thomas Tuchel is in advanced talks about becoming the next England manager.
Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is in advanced discussions to take over as England’s next manager, according to reports.
The Football Association (FA) approached Tuchel as part of their search for Gareth Southgate’s successor, and the talks have progressed rapidly.
Tuchel is reportedly interested in the role, with negotiations picking up pace in recent days.
Although no formal agreement has been reached yet, firm talks are expected to continue in the coming days as both parties look to finalise the deal.
Appointing Thomas Tuchel as England manager would mark a significant moment in English football history, as a German coach takes charge of the national team.
While this move might raise eyebrows, Tuchel is a familiar and popular figure in English football due to his successful spell at Chelsea.
He boasts an impressive resume, having won the Champions League, and was lauded for steering Chelsea through turbulent times during their ownership crisis.
The Football Association (FA) has reportedly explored various candidates, including Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
However, despite initial interest, there’s a sense that Guardiola, whose contract at City expires this summer, is likely to remain at the Etihad for at least another year.
Tuchel, always considered a frontrunner, has also been on Manchester United’s radar, but recent developments suggest that the FA’s interest in him has rapidly intensified.
Should the move materialise, Tuchel would not be the first foreign coach to manage England, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Interim boss Lee Carsley has emphasized the FA’s desire to hire a “world-class manager” capable of delivering trophies, and Tuchel undoubtedly fits that profile.
While a deal has yet to be finalized, there is growing confidence that the FA may have found their man.
Carsley is expected to remain in charge for the upcoming Nations League fixtures next month, but with the World Cup draw set for December 13, the FA will want the new manager in place for the start of qualification.
Tuchel, who previously worked with England captain Harry Kane at Bayern Munich, could be in pole position for the role.
Despite leaving his position at Bayern at the end of the season, he remains on their payroll, effectively on gardening leave.
It remains unclear whether the FA or Tuchel himself would need to negotiate a release from his Bayern contract, but all signs point to an exciting appointment for the England national team.
