Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the new manager of the England national team after finalizing a deal with the Football Association (FA).

The German coach will be officially unveiled later this week.

Tuchel quickly emerged as the frontrunner for the position on Tuesday, following his departure from Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

After confirming his interest in the role, FA executives promptly initiated negotiations.

As reported by The Times, a deal has now been reached, making Tuchel the third permanent foreign manager in England’s history, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

The FA has been seeking a successor since Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024.

Lee Carsley has served as the interim manager, leading the Three Lions through the Nations League.

However, following last week’s defeat to Greece and a victory over Finland on Sunday, Carsley stated he would not be taking on the role permanently.

Tuchel became the top candidate after FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham and Technical Director John McDermott approached him last month.

Having been out of work since his sacking by Bayern, Tuchel has been on gardening leave, with the Bundesliga club not expected to demand compensation.

The FA plans to hold a press conference this week to announce Tuchel’s appointment.

The German manager has previously coached Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, leading the Blues to four cup finals and winning the Champions League before his dismissal in September 2022.

He also guided Dortmund to the DFB-Pokal in 2017, PSG to two Ligue 1 titles, and Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2023.

Thomas Tuchel already has the backing of England captain Harry Kane, who praised him as a “fantastic coach.”

Kane flourished under Tuchel at Bayern, scoring 44 goals in 45 appearances.

“To be honest, I haven’t heard anything specific about it yet. That’s why I can’t really comment on it until it’s officially announced,” Kane told Sky Germany when asked about Tuchel’s talks with the FA.

“We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I obviously know Thomas very well from the last year.

“He’s a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. I’m sure the FA will contact me when they know more about this issue.”
