Thomas Tuchel refuses to confirm whether Harry Kane will remain England captain
Tuchel is set to reunite with Kane, having previously worked with him at Bayern Munich
Thomas Tuchel has refused to confirm whether Harry Kane will retain the England captaincy following his appointment as the national team’s manager.
Tuchel, who signed an 18-month contract to take over the role, is set to reunite with Kane, having previously worked with him at Bayern Munich.
The pair had a successful collaboration in Germany, with Tuchel playing a key role in convincing Bayern to invest in Kane, who netted an impressive 44 goals in his debut season.
However, Tuchel left the Bavarian club after a trophyless campaign last summer.
While Tuchel has expressed excitement about working with Kane again, he has yet to decide if the star striker will continue as England’s captain.
Kane has worn the armband since the 2018 World Cup and has been a pivotal leader for the Three Lions, scoring 68 goals in 101 appearances for his country.
When asked about Kane’s future as captain, Tuchel offered a cautious response, indicating that the decision had not yet been made.
He told reporters: “Everyone knows how I feel about Harry.
“I fought very hard to bring him to Bayern.
“He is already on his way to being a legend.
“But it’s too early to make these decisions [about the captaincy].
“I want to give the respect to Lee [Carsley] and not interfere [with the next two games].”
Meanwhile, Harry Kane has already taken the time to welcome Tuchel to his new position.
He posted on X: “Looking forward to playing under the boss again!”
Kane is expected to lead England again in November when the Three Lions face Greece and Ireland in Lee Carsley’s final fixtures as interim manager.
However, fans will have to wait and see who will wear the captain’s armband when Tuchel takes charge of the national team in 2025
