Thomas Frank provides update on Brentford future amid talk of Man United interest

Thomas Frank has been linked with the Manchester United job

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has reiterated his contentment at the club amid speculation linking him with the Manchester United job, though he hasn’t completely ruled out a potential departure.

Frank, who has been at the helm since 2018 following Dean Smith’s exit to Aston Villa, has transformed the West London side, guiding them to promotion and securing their place in the Premier League for four consecutive seasons.

Manchester United officials are reportedly impressed by the Dane’s achievements, especially with ongoing uncertainties surrounding Erik ten Hag’s position.

Despite United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season, Ten Hag remains in charge after managing draws against Porto and Aston Villa before the international break.

Coincidentally, United’s next fixture will see them face Brentford at Old Trafford, a game some are calling a potential “audition” for Frank.

In an interview with talkSPORT ahead of the match, Frank addressed his future after being asked about Pep Guardiola’s comments in September, where the Manchester City manager suggested that Frank moving to a top club was “just a question of time.”

“I’ve said many times I’m very happy at Brentford,” Thomas Frank began.

“Who knows what will happen in the future.

“Maybe I stay here for many years. I’m open, maybe something happens.

“But first and foremost, very happy, just working very hard every day to make the club better.”

When pushed further on his reference to the future, he said: “That’s because it’s very difficult to predict the future.

“Who knows what will happen.

“How many coaches have been at the same club more than six years?

“Very few.”

In a dramatic late turnaround, Manchester United secured a comeback victory over Brentford in their October 2023 meeting.

Mathias Jensen gave the visitors the lead in the first half, and Brentford held onto their 1-0 advantage deep into stoppage time.

However, Scott McTominay, coming off the bench, scored twice to steal the win for Erik ten Hag’s side.

McTominay has since departed for Napoli during the summer transfer window, one of several high-profile exits from the squad.

Ten Hag now faces significant challenges with key players out through injury.

Centre-backs Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire, along with left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, are sidelined.

Midfielder Manuel Ugarte is also a doubt after sustaining an injury on international duty.

United are enduring a tough spell, winless in their last five matches and failing to score in three of them.

Despite this, Ten Hag appeared more assured about his future following a goalless draw at Villa Park in their last outing.

Notably, one of the names linked with the United job over the summer, Thomas Tuchel, has since committed to taking over as England men’s national team manager from January.
