Jamie Carragher has identified a key reason why he believes Mohamed Salah will sign a new contract with Liverpool.
Salah is currently in the final year of his contract and will be eligible to negotiate with non-English clubs starting in January.
However, Carragher thinks the forward will choose to stay at Anfield in order to solidify his legacy by breaking as many records as possible.
The 32-year-old recently moved up to join ninth place alongside Jermain Defoe on the all-time Premier League goalscorers list, having scored 162 goals after netting in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
Salah is just 13 goals shy of seventh-placed Thierry Henry and 15 behind Frank Lampard, and Carragher believes he will be motivated to finish even higher on that list.
“He’ll have an eye on Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard by the end of this season, I would imagine,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“I think stats like this are one of the biggest reasons why Mo Salah will sign a new contract at Liverpool.
“Of course they’ll be talking about money and length of contract, but I think these are the things that really get the juices flowing for Mo Salah.
“He breaks all the records at Liverpool, but getting as far as he can up those lists, I think that’s a big part of his focus as a player.”
On the victory over Chelsea, Jamie Carragher added: “It was a brilliant game.
“Chelsea more than played their part in it. It almost feels like the first really big game or result for Slot at Anfield.
“We’ve spoken before about the atmosphere, but Anfield really gets going in games like this.
“Liverpool were under the cosh at times and they needed the Anfield crowd to get them over the line.
“It feels like a really big win and Arne Slot knows that.
“Liverpool weren’t at their best but they found a way to win and that’s been the hallmark of so many great Liverpool teams in the past.”
