AC Milan renew interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Gomez remains under contract until 2027

Serie A giants AC Milan have not given up hope of signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to the latest reports from Italy.

The 28-year-old was heavily linked with a move to San Siro on deadline day of the summer transfer window, but the deal reportedly collapsed due to Liverpool’s inability to secure a replacement.

The Reds had been pursuing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, and a £35million move was believed to be close before the London club pulled the plug in the final hours of the window.

Guehi is now expected to see out his contract at Selhurst Park and become a free agent next summer, although Liverpool will likely face fierce competition for his signature from Europe’s elite clubs.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona have all been linked with the England international ahead of his potential free agency.

Liverpool did strengthen their defensive ranks with the signing of teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma.

However, after the 18-year-old suffered an ACL injury on his debut for the Reds against Southampton in the Carabao Cup in September, keeping hold of Gomez has proved a wise decision.

With Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk the only other fit senior centre-backs available, Gomez has remained an important squad option for Arne Slot.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Milan are prepared to move swiftly when the January transfer window reopens.

The report claims that talks with Gomez had progressed positively in the summer, and it was not the player’s reluctance that caused the deal to fall through.

Sporting director Igli Tare is said to still have Liverpool’s longest-serving player firmly in his sights, with what the outlet describes as an impending “attack” for his signature.

Joe Gomez has made just seven appearances across all competitions this season, totalling 238 minutes.

His limited game time was a major factor behind the summer transfer speculation, and continued lack of opportunities could once again prompt the defender to consider his future at Anfield.

Having joined Liverpool in 2015, Gomez has made just under 250 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He remains under contract until 2027, and it is currently unclear how much Milan would be willing to offer for his services.
