Alisson Becker’s absence from Liverpool’s squad for the match against Tottenham Hotspur came as a surprise, but the decision was not due to injury.
Instead, Liverpool manager Arne Slot chose to rest his goalkeeper amid a hectic run of fixtures.
Caoimhin Kelleher was given the nod to start in goal for the Reds, with Vitezslav Jaros named on the bench.
This was not entirely unexpected, as Kelleher has frequently featured in cup competitions under both Slot and his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp.
There had been some uncertainty leading up to the game, however, as Alisson had played in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
It is understood that his involvement in that match was part of his recovery plan following a minor knock, with the intention for Kelleher to start in the second leg.
Despite speculation, Slot remained tight-lipped about the situation during his press conference on Wednesday.
“I know [my decision] but the two goalkeepers don’t know yet,” the Dutchman replied when asked who would start between the sticks.
“I’m going to leave this room and go to the media next door, and afterwards I’m going to inform the goalkeepers which decision I’ve made.”
