Alphonso Davies signs new contract at Bayern Munich, ending Real Madrid speculation

Alphonso Davies will not be making a move to Real Madrid as a free agent this summer after agreeing to a new five-and-a-half-year contract with Bayern Munich.

With just six months remaining on his previous deal, Davies had been the subject of significant interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.

Real Madrid had long been considered the frontrunners for the Canada international, and there had been occasional reports of Premier League interest as well.

At one point, Bayern Munich seemed resigned to the possibility of losing Davies, but as negotiations for an extension progressed, optimism grew that the player might commit to a long-term future in Germany.

Reports last month indicated that an agreement was drawing closer, and Bayern confirmed in an official statement – just a day after the January transfer window closed – that Davies has signed a new contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.

“I am very happy to have extended my contract at this great club,” Davies told club channels.

“I came to FC Bayern when I was 18 and just wanted to learn as much as possible every day to become one of the best in my position.

“Now I’m looking forward to another five years together. I’ve already achieved a lot here, but there’s more to come.”

Christoph Freund, Bayern’s sporting director, added: “Alphonso Davies has become one of the best players in the world in his position at Bayern and has attracted a lot of interest.

“The fact he wants to continue here with us shows Bayern’s status in international football and that Alphonso has found his sporting home in Munich.”
