Andy Robertson said he had been thinking about his late former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota after helping Scotland qualify for the World Cup.
Scotland needed to beat Denmark to reach their first World Cup finals since 1998 and thanks to two stoppage-time goals, they did just that, securing a thrilling 4–2 victory to book their place at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In his post-match interview with the BBC, Andy Robertson spoke about his close friend Jota, the Portugal international who tragically died in a car crash in July, along with his brother, Andre Silva.
The Liverpool left-back said: “It was one of the craziest games of football – we certainly put the country through it, but I’m sure it’s all worth it. We’re going the World Cup! I can’t believe it!
“I’ve hid it well but today I’ve been in bits. I know the age I’m at this is my last chance of a World Cup and I couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my head today. We spoke so much together about this World Cup.
“He missed out on (2022 World Cup in) Qatar through injury and I missed out because Scotland never went. We always discussed what it’d be like going to this World Cup and I know he’ll be somewhere smiling over me tonight.
“I couldn’t get him out of my head the whole day so I was in a bit of trouble in my room. But I hid it well from the boys and I’m just so glad it’s ended up this way.”
