Arne Slot has been handed a two-match touchline ban following his red card in the aftermath of Liverpool’s draw against Everton.
Slot, along with assistant coach Spike Hulshoff, confronted referee Michael Oliver after the final whistle to protest James Tarkowski’s last-minute equaliser.
Liverpool believed there was a foul in the build-up, but Oliver awarded the goal, and VAR upheld the decision.
After shaking Oliver’s hand, Slot was shown a red card, leading to confusion over the reason for his dismissal at Everton.
The Premier League has now clarified that the decision was due to the Dutchman using “offensive, insulting, or abusive language.”
In a statement, the Premier League said: “Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was dismissed at the end of the Merseyside derby for using offensive, insulting, or abusive language.
“He is handed a two-match touchline ban as a result.”
While managers who receive a red card are typically handed a one-match touchline ban, the use of abusive language has resulted in a two-match ban for Slot.
As a result, he was unable to conduct his post-match media duties following Wednesday’s game, in accordance with Premier League regulations.
First-team coach Jonny Heitinga will take charge for Sunday’s match against struggling Wolves.
He may also remain in charge for Wednesday’s trip to Aston Villa, should Hulshoff also be handed a two-match ban.
Liverpool’s Curtis Jones was also shown a red card by referee Oliver for his involvement in the mass brawl that ensued after the game.
Jones shoved Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, who had taunted the Liverpool fans by celebrating in front of them.
