Manchester United will need to fend off significant competition if they are to reunite Ruben Amorim with Viktor Gyokeres.
Amorim, the current Sporting Lisbon head coach, has been confirmed as the new manager of the Red Devils.
Reports suggest that he could bring one of his former players, Viktor Gyokeres, with him to Old Trafford.
The Swedish striker has emerged as a key target for United, especially after sending a strong message in Amorim’s final home game with Sporting.
Gyokeres scored a stunning hat-trick in the club’s 4-1 Champions League win over Manchester City.
Gyokeres could be available sooner than expected.
Sporting Lisbon has moved to reduce the sell-on clause owed to his former club, Coventry, and it’s been reported that the Portuguese side could be willing to sell for around £63 million next summer.
While United could look to capitalize on this opportunity, they will face stiff competition for the striker’s signature.
According to The Sun, Gyokeres’ representatives are pushing for a move to a club in the Champions League.
This has alerted top Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom are hoping to qualify for next season’s competition. Arsenal, in particular, have been monitoring Gyokeres for the past 12 months.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have also been linked with the striker, although the French giants are reportedly not interested at this stage.
Le Parisien suggests that PSG are put off by the high asking price for Gyokeres.
Amorim recently commented on Gyokeres but stopped short of confirming whether he would look to bring the forward to Manchester United.
He said: “I’ve just made peace with the Sporting fans, I’m not even going to make a joke about it.
“Gyokeres is a Sporting player, which is a great club, he did a lot for it, he was in the second division, he just has to stay and finish the season at Marques.”
