Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe joins Fulham for club record fee

Fulham have announced a club-record signing of Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal.

The transfer deal, which marks a record for Fulham, involves an initial payment of £27 million, with add-ons potentially bringing the total to £34 million.

Smith Rowe returned to London on Tuesday from Arsenal’s pre-season tour in the USA to undergo his medical examination.

Last season, the 24-year-old played only 346 minutes in the Premier League, making just three starts due to a knee injury that sidelined him for six weeks in October.

The midfielder, who has earned three senior England caps with his last appearance in March 2022, was also part of the squad that won the UEFA European U21 Championship last summer.

Fulham are currently in Portugal for their pre-season training camp, and it is anticipated that Smith Rowe will join them during the camp.

The move aligns with Smith Rowe’s desire for regular first-team football, which has been his primary motivation.

His departure from Arsenal is considered beneficial for all parties involved.

He had been part of the Arsenal squad during their pre-season tour in the United States and was an unused substitute in last week’s friendly against Bournemouth in Los Angeles, which Arsenal won on penalties.

Speaking to FFCtv after putting pen to paper, Smith Rowe said: “I’m finally here, so I’m really happy for me and my family – it’s a good moment.

“I’m really excited, I just wanted to get here as quickly as possible so I could get going with my teammates.

“Listening to the project, speaking to the Manager, and seeing what players we have here already, I think it’s an exciting project for me, and definitely the perfect step for my career going forward.”

Tony Khan added: “I’m thrilled to announce the arrival of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham Football Club!

“We’re very excited to sign such a talented young player, and we look forward to Emile joining the squad in Portugal as we continue to prepare for the new season ahead! Come on Fulham!”

Fulham are active in the transfer market, having engaged in discussions with Aston Villa regarding centre-back Diego Carlos.

Additionally, Villarreal’s Jorge Cuenca is anticipated to undergo a medical with Fulham at their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

These moves cast doubt on Tim Ream’s future with the club, especially after Fulham lost Tosin Adarabioyo to Chelsea following the expiration of his contract.

Ream did not travel to Portugal, and MLS side Charlotte FC has shown interest in signing him as he enters the final year of his contract.

In other transfer news, talks continue with Manchester United concerning the potential acquisition of midfielder Scott McTominay.
