Arsenal are reportedly planning their summer transfer strategy with the anticipated arrival of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
Following Liverpool’s failed pursuit of Zubimendi last summer, it is now Arsenal who are leading the charge to bring the Spanish international to the Premier League.
In January, there were even early reports suggesting that a deal had already been agreed, though these proved premature.
However, Real Madrid, sensing the risk of missing out, have entered the race for Zubimendi’s signature as part of their strategy to increase the number of Spanish internationals in their squad.
Despite this, Arsenal are believed to remain in the driver’s seat.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Arsenal officials are so confident in their pursuit that they are already “expecting” Zubimendi to join the club this summer.
While no formal deal has yet been agreed, it is noted that both former sporting director Edu and his interim replacement, Jason Ayto, had already made significant progress in negotiations.
This groundwork is thought to be part of an effort to make the process easier for Andrea Berta, the club’s new transfer guru.
Martin Zubimendi also has a relationship with Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino, having formed a partnership with him at Real Sociedad before Merino’s move to the Emirates last summer.
In addition to strengthening their midfield, Arsenal are also targeting reinforcements in several other positions, including a striker, winger, and backup goalkeeper.
There have also been rumors linking the club with a new full-back.
