Arsenal to renew pursuit of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer

Arsenal are reportedly set to make a fresh approach for Joan Garcia during the upcoming summer transfer window, following their failure to secure the Espanyol goalkeeper last year.

The Gunners found themselves in the market for a new goalkeeper after Aaron Ramsdale expressed his desire to leave the club, having lost his starting position to David Raya.

Ramsdale was subsequently sold to Southampton, and Arsenal brought in Neto on loan from Bournemouth as a short-term replacement after missing out on Garcia.

However, Neto is only a temporary solution and failed to impress when standing in for Raya during the Champions League clash with Girona last week.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal took advantage of their trip to Catalonia for the Girona match to meet with Garcia’s representatives.

The club are reportedly keen to pursue the Olympic gold medalist once again ahead of next season.

Additionally, SPORT has reported that Arsenal are confident they can reach an agreement with Joan Garcia over a potential transfer.

The main hurdle may lie in negotiating with Espanyol, who appear determined to hold out for the full €25m (£21m) release clause.

Garcia himself expressed in January his desire to leave Espanyol, a move he believes would benefit both parties, potentially bringing a significant financial boost to the club.

“It will be for the good of everyone [if I leave]. Mine and the club, which is the one that has made me grow. It can’t be any other way,” he told Radio Marca.
