Arsenal to step up interest in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko after Gabriel Jesus injury

Arsenal are reportedly ramping up their pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko following the season-ending injury to Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian forward suffered a torn ACL during the Gunners’ FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United, ending a strong run of form in which he scored seven goals across all competitions.

Sesko, a 21-year-old Slovenian forward, has long been on Arsenal’s radar. The Gunners were first linked with Šeško as early as April 2024.

However, Arsenal were left frustrated when the striker signed a new deal with Leipzig last summer.

Despite this, a “gentleman’s agreement” was reportedly included in the contract, allowing Sesko to pursue a move to a bigger club if favorable terms could be reached for Leipzig.

According to The Times, Arsenal’s timeline for a potential bid has been accelerated due to Jesus’ injury.

Manager Mikel Arteta now faces mounting pressure to find a reliable goal scorer, with Kai Havertz struggling to lead the line consistently.

Arsenal’s attacking concerns are further compounded by the absence of Bukayo Saka, sidelined with a hamstring injury.

The England international’s absence has diminished Arsenal’s creativity and cutting edge, and he is not expected to return for several weeks.

Despite Arsenal’s interest, Leipzig manager Marco Rose has dismissed the prospect of a January transfer. Speaking to German media, Rose said, “That’s not the case, not the topic for us.”

Additionally, Sesko’s agent, Elvis Basanovič, has ruled out the possibility of a loan move, indicating that Arsenal would need to meet Leipzig’s valuation to secure a deal.

Sesko’s performances this season have underlined his potential.

The striker has scored eight goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances and added five more in domestic cup and Champions League competitions, bringing his total to 13 goals.

That tally surpasses the 12 goals managed by Havertz across all competitions for Arsenal this season.

The Gunners will need to act swiftly and decisively if they hope to bring Benjamin Sesko to the Emirates Stadium and bolster their attack during a critical phase of the campaign.
