Barcelona have reportedly shown “genuine” interest in Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, as the Reds face a potential transfer dilemma with several of their key attackers at risk of leaving the club.
Since joining Liverpool from FC Porto in 2022, the Colombian has impressed, scoring 37 goals in 139 appearances.
However, with his current contract expiring in just over two years, Díaz has yet to sign a new deal, and reports from The Athletic suggest Barcelona are poised to make a move.
Liverpool are already grappling with a looming contract crisis, with key players like Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk facing potential free transfers this summer.
Negotiations have reportedly stalled, and the club is eager to avoid a similar situation with Díaz.
This could push Liverpool to consider cashing in on the winger now, rather than risk losing him for nothing.
By the time Díaz’s contract expires, he will be in his 30s, prompting Liverpool to consider a sale – especially since they have other attacking options, including Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, Cody Gakpo, and Darwin Nunez.
However, with Salah expected to leave on a free transfer and possible interest in Nunez, Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces the dilemma of whether to cash in on both Díaz and Nunez, in addition to losing Salah.
Liverpool currently lead the Premier League by 15 points and look set to claim the title, but Slot will be reluctant to lose too many core players who have contributed to the team’s immediate success under his leadership.
Diaz himself has enjoyed a standout season under Slot, with 13 goals and 4 assists across all competitions.
Reports suggest Liverpool are preparing for the possibility of losing several forwards in the summer, with Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon previously linked to a move.
However, Gordon, who only signed a new contract at St James’ Park in October, is unlikely to be available, making any move for the 24-year-old highly improbable.
