Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly ready to spend “a lot of money” to secure Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, according to a report from Germany.
Despite a solid performance under Mauricio Pochettino last season, Petrovic was loaned to sister club Strasbourg during the summer after new manager Enzo Maresca chose Robert Sanchez as his first-choice goalkeeper.
While Sanchez and newly signed backup Filip Jorgensen have had mixed seasons, Petrovic has thrived at Strasbourg.
The 25-year-old boasts a save percentage of 80.1%, higher than either of Chelsea’s senior goalkeepers, and is even in the running for Ligue 1’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Petrovic is expected to return to Chelsea in the summer as part of a major reshuffle in the goalkeeper department.
When Kepa Arrizabalaga returns from his loan at Bournemouth, Chelsea will have seven goalkeepers on their books, with 19-year-old Mike Penders also set to finalise a £17m move from Genk.
While it’s possible Petrovic could feature in Maresca’s plans for next season, Kicker reports that several clubs have taken an interest in the Serbian international, with Leverkusen reportedly prioritizing him as their target to reinforce the goalkeeper position.
The exact price tag for Petrovic is still unclear, but Leverkusen are said to be prepared to commit significant funds to convince Chelsea to sell.
Should Petrovic return to Chelsea, it could lead to the departure of either Sanchez or Jorgensen, with Marcus Bettinelli remaining as the third-choice goalkeeper.
Chelsea are open to offers for Kepa, who could extend his loan at Bournemouth if Real Madrid do not act on their renewed interest.
Meanwhile, Penders is expected to go out on loan, and U.S. international Gabriel Slonina, signed for £12m in 2022, will also be available for a temporary move.
