Bruno Fernandes admits he had offers to leave Man United before new contract

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he received offers to leave the club last summer before ultimately signing a new contract.

The Portuguese playmaker was heavily linked with a move away, with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain among the clubs reportedly interested.

Following United’s surprise FA Cup final victory, Fernandes committed his future to Old Trafford, signing a deal that runs until the summer of 2027.

However, he admitted the decision wasn’t straightforward.

“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave,” Fernandes revealed.

“We discussed the possibility of me moving on or staying. They told me what they expected from me, and I simply asked if they still saw me as part of the club’s future.”

At the time, Erik ten Hag remained in charge, having unexpectedly been given a contract extension earlier that summer—an offer co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has since described as an “error.”

“I spoke at the time with Ten Hag also,” Bruno Fernandes continued.

“He was very clear with me, the club was very clear with me, that they thought I would be a big part of this rebuild. I thought that we could be successful.”

While the decision to retain Ten Hag was quickly and expensively reversed, Fernandes has consistently proven why convincing him to stay was a major coup for United.

However, the captain – who showcased his quality with a hat-trick against Real Sociedad on Thursday night – is not universally admired.
