Darwin Nunez would reportedly favour a return to Liverpool if he leaves Al-Hilal this summer.

The Uruguayan’s future has come under increasing scrutiny after a difficult spell in Saudi Arabia. According to Fichajes, Nunez is open to returning to Anfield amid interest from Newcastle United and Chelsea.

Nunez lost his place in Al-Hilal’s squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema in January. The club’s foreign player quota reportedly led to the striker being de-registered from the league squad, leaving him frustrated with his situation.

Newcastle are said to be monitoring the 26-year-old as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his attack. Chelsea are also reportedly interested, with new head coach Xabi Alonso keen to add an experienced striker ahead of the new season.

However, the report claims Nunez’s preference would be a return to Liverpool.

The Reds are in the market for attacking reinforcements following Hugo Ekitike’s long-term injury, while the departure of Arne Slot and the arrival of Andoni Iraola could potentially influence any decision regarding the former Liverpool forward.

Darwin Nunez joined Al-Hilal from Liverpool in a £46million deal and initially made a promising start, scoring six goals in 16 Saudi Pro League appearances.

However, his role diminished after Benzema’s arrival, fuelling speculation over a possible exit.

The report adds that Al-Hilal and Nunez could even agree to terminate his contract by mutual consent. If that were to happen, the striker would become a free agent, likely attracting significant interest from clubs across Europe.

Whether Liverpool would pursue a reunion remains unclear, but Nunez’s reported desire to return to Anfield is likely to generate plenty of discussion in the months ahead.
