Gary Lineker has revealed that even Arne Slot has been taken aback by Ryan Gravenberch’s impressive performances for Liverpool this season.
The 22-year-old midfielder has thrived in a deeper role under Slot, a position he wasn’t initially expected to excel in.
Liverpool had targeted Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi for that role last summer, but a proposed transfer fell through.
However, Gravenberch has exceeded expectations in the No.6 role, playing a crucial part in Liverpool’s unexpected rise as Premier League title contenders.
With Gravenberch’s success, it remains to be seen whether Slot and his staff will still pursue a new defensive midfielder in the transfer market.
Interestingly, the Dutchman’s own compatriot has been surprised by his impact.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker—who is set to step down as Match of the Day host—shared details of a private conversation with Slot, where the Liverpool boss admitted his surprise at Gravenberch’s rapid adaptation and influence in the team.
Gary Lineker said: “Those two [Gravenberch and Szoboszlai] have been terrific this season. I think probably Gravenberch has been one of the surprises of the season.
“Even Arne Slot said he was surprised how good he was when he came in, when I spoke to him in the interview a couple of weeks ago.
“He’s been superb, as has Szoboszlai, both dangerous players.”
