Hugo Ekitike speaks on rivalry and partnership with Alexander Isak at Liverpool

Hugo Ekitike once saw his path to regular first-team football blocked by none other than Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar.

So, the challenge of competing with fellow new signing Alexander Isak for a starting spot at Liverpool holds no fear for him.

Instead, the ambitious French forward views the arrival of the £125million man as a positive, and he’s looking forward to the prospect of playing alongside the Sweden international.

“We are playing at such a big club, and I can’t see one big club playing just with only one striker,” said Hugo Ekitike.

“It’s good that he is here, even for me. I have still a lot of things to improve and learn.”

Hugo Ekitike is expected to reclaim his starting role for Liverpool against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, after serving a suspension in Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace.

In his absence, Alexander Isak continued his push for full match sharpness with an 84-minute display.

The two forwards are yet to feature on the pitch together, with Ekitike twice coming on to replace Isak as a substitute, and the Swede doing likewise in the recent win over Everton.

“I have played in two strikers composition and one striker, so I can do a lot of things,” he said. “If we have to play together I can do that.

“The coach hasn’t talked a lot about my way to play or where I need to play.

“He gave me a lot of freedom in terms of being able to link up with the boys or go behind.

“I can do a lot of things, he just wants me to bring my football in the team.”
