Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
The 27-year-old’s current deal at Anfield, signed after his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2021, runs until June 30.
Konate had been in talks with Liverpool over a new contract since October 2024 and said in April there was a “big chance” he would stay. However, negotiations have stalled, with the France international now set to depart as a free agent.
Speaking after the Merseyside derby win, the 27-year-old said: “There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement.
“I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible but we are in a good way.”
He added: “For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted.
“I’m waiting to sort the contract but when everything is sorted you will have to ask Richard what I said to him in September, November before everyone talked about everything and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.
“When he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that.”
Real Madrid had previously considered a move for Konate, though reports in November claimed the Spanish giants were no longer pursuing him.
Liverpool have already strengthened in central defence ahead of his departure, signing Giovanni Leoni from Parma last summer, while Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is expected to join this summer.
Despite an inconsistent 2025-26 campaign, Konate remained a key player under Arne Slot, making 51 appearances in all competitions alongside Virgil van Dijk. He also earned a place in France’s World Cup squad.
Ibrahima Konate joined Liverpool after the club activated his £35million release clause at RB Leipzig in 2021. He has since made 183 appearances for the Reds, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
