Is Mo Salah the Best Player in the World?

Mohamed Salah has taken his incredible records to new heights this season, further solidifying his status as one of the world’s elite footballers. On Sunday evening, the Liverpool attacker inspired the league leaders to a 2-0 victory over defending champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The 32-year-old scored in the 14th minute from a smart corner kick, although his goal-bound effort deflected off City defender Nathan Ake before going past Ederson. Fifteen minutes later, the Egyptian turned a provider, finding Dominik Szoboszlai with a perfectly timed pass to double Liverpool’s lead.

Salah has shown hunger and desire all season, with his fitness and energy levels among the best in the sport. Last week, in an interview with Sky Sports, he revealed that he and Virgil Van Dijk were unhappy about dropping four points in their previous three matches against Everton and Aston Villa. Despite the quiet surrounding his contract situation, Salah has continued to let his performances on the pitch do the talking.

With 41 goals and assists in the Premier League this season, Salah has appeared twice in the list of the top 10 most goal involvements in the competition’s history. He is also the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to be directly involved in 50 goals across all competitions in the 2024/25 season, according to Squawka via X.

Salah joins Kevin Phillips and Harry Kane as the only players to have scored the most away goals (16) in Premier League history. He is the first player in Premier League history to score and assist in both games against the reigning champions in a single season.

Mohamed Salah has scored in each of his last 11 Premier League appearances on Sundays, the longest scoring run by a player on any day of the week in Premier League history. This is also the most by a player in a single season in one of Europe’s big five leagues since Lionel Messi for Barcelona in 2014/15.

Salah has provided more assists in the 2024/25 season than any other Liverpool player in a single Premier League campaign. He is the first player to score 25+ goals and register 15+ assists in a Premier League season. His numbers in the game against Manchester City mean he now has both the most goals (9) and most assists (6) of any player against sides managed by Pep Guardiola in his top-flight league managerial career.

Opta also shared a stat on how generous the Liverpool man has been across the continent’s big leagues. They tweeted that Mohamed Salah has created more chances in open play than any other player across Europe’s big-five leagues this season (58).

Many will remember Salah’s promise to Liverpool fans at the end of last season, vowing to do everything possible to win the title this season. With seven home games remaining from their last 11 matches, this promise is on the path to fulfillment.

Before that, Liverpool has a chance at their first silverware of the season when they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in two weeks. They also return to UEFA Champions League action, facing French champions PSG in the round of 16.

Salah is Liverpool’s top scorer in Europe’s premier club competition with 45 goals, having long surpassed club legend Steven Gerrard. With his current form, one would not bet against him consolidating his place at the top with a few more goals before the season ends. Salah will play a crucial role if Liverpool is to go far in the competition.

Given his remarkable achievements and consistent performances, it is hard to argue against Mohamed Salah being the best player in the world right now.
