Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s midfield remains a “huge problem” and has called for the club to sign a new No. 6.
Liverpool have added defenders Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo, along with winger Victor Munoz, this summer. Kostas Tsimikas and Harvey Elliott have also returned from loan spells.
The priority for the remainder of the transfer window is reportedly to sign new wingers, with a midfielder not considered an urgent need.
Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, before his move to Manchester City, were linked with Liverpool earlier this year, but the club have not prioritised signing a specialist No. 6.
Jamie Carragher believes that could prove costly, saying on The Overlap: “The midfield issue for me is still a huge problem for Liverpool.”
Ryan Gravenberch operated as the No. 6 during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign but struggled under new instructions last season, leaving too much space for opponents to exploit.
With Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai expected to form the midfield double pivot, Carragher fears the same problems could continue without a natural No. 6 being added.
“The problem Liverpool had last season was there was space everywhere in Liverpool’s midfield,” Carragher started. “That has not gone away at all.
“That’s only going to get bigger with the deployment of Szoboszlai in midfield – it looks like they’re going to play him, rather than as a No. 10, almost as a central midfield player alongside Gravenberch, and that is just pure box-to-box.
“I look at that midfield three and I worry about Liverpool.”
Carragher added: “When you name six or seven of Liverpool’s players, you can’t say they’re not top players. You can’t say Gravenberch is not a really good player, or Wirtz, or Szoboszlai.
“But as a midfield three, I look at that and think, oh no – there’s almost too much quality, but they all want to go and play and run.
“And even in pre-season, the space is coming through the middle.”
