Kepa Arrizabalaga has confirmed that he will engage in talks with Chelsea over his long-term future in the coming weeks following ongoing transfer speculation linking him to Real Madrid.
The 30-year-old made headlines when he became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper following his £71m move to Chelsea in 2018.
However, after a series of disappointing performances, he lost his place as the team’s starting keeper.
Kepa spent last season on loan at Real Madrid to cover for the injured Thibaut Courtois, and he has since revived his career with a temporary move to Bournemouth this season.
Bournemouth, eager to secure his services permanently, are reportedly interested in making the move, though no permanent agreement exists between the two clubs.
Additionally, Real Madrid are said to be monitoring Kepa’s situation as a potential replacement for their backup goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin.
Speaking after Bournemouth’s 2-2 draw with West Ham United, Kepa Arrizabalaga addressed questions about his future.
While he admitted he was uncertain about his next step, he made it clear that he was thoroughly enjoying his time at the Vitality Stadium.
“Obviously, what I can say is that I’m really happy and enjoying my playing time here,” Kepa explained.
“I think I’m showing that, and I’m feeling well on the pitch.
“It’s not the time to think about the future. We’ll make a decision soon, as we are in touch with everyone.
“Right now, I’m under contract with Chelsea, and we’ll have some conversations in the next few weeks before deciding.”
Kepa will return to Chelsea this summer with just 12 months remaining on his current contract.
The Blues have been eager to part ways with the Spaniard, even considering offering a financial settlement to ease his exit.
Last year, Chelsea struggled to persuade Kepa to make the move to Saudi Arabia.
Chelsea currently have several goalkeepers vying for a spot in the squad for next season.
Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen are the senior options under manager Enzo Maresca, while Djordje Petrovic could reassert himself following an impressive loan spell with sister club Strasbourg.
Additionally, highly-rated 19-year-old Mike Penders is set to join the Blues from Genk in a deal worth £17m.
