Kylian Mbappe has claimed the European Golden Shoe for the first time after scoring twice in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday.
The France international finished the season with 31 league goals in his debut campaign in Spain, earning him both the European Golden Shoe and La Liga’s top scorer award.
Mbappe’s brace in Real Madrid’s final league game secured his position at the top of the rankings, ahead of Sporting CP striker Victor Gyokeres (39 goals) and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah (29 goals).
Although Gyokeres scored eight more league goals than Mbappe, he finished second due to the weighted points system used to determine the award.
Goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues – the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 – are worth two points each.
Goals scored in leagues ranked sixth to 22nd by UEFA’s coefficient, including Portugal’s Primeira Liga, count as 1.5 points.
Mohamed Salah needed a hat-trick in Liverpool’s final Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday to tie with Mbappe, but managed just one goal in a 1-1 draw.
Mbappe is only the third Real Madrid player to win the European Golden Shoe, following Hugo Sánchez (1989-90) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2010-11, 2013-14, and 2014-15).
Victor Gyokeres, who has been heavily linked with a summer move to Arsenal, had no chance of catching Mbappe since Sporting’s league campaign ended the previous weekend.
After scoring in Sporting’s 3-1 victory over Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final on Sunday, the Swedish striker finished the season with 53 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions.
