Liverpool and Man City monitoring Lamine Yamal amid Barcelona’s financial uncertainty

Barcelona’s ongoing financial troubles have raised hopes for Liverpool and Manchester City, who may be eyeing a potential move for Lamine Yamal.

The teenage sensation has consistently expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona beyond the expiration of his current contract in 2026, and the club is adamant that he won’t be leaving.

However, financial constraints may force a different outcome, much like they did with Lionel Messi in 2021.

Despite securing a victory in their appeal to keep Dani Olmo on the pitch, La Liga revealed this week that Barcelona remains in violation of the league’s strict financial fair play regulations.

Manager Hansi Flick has openly expressed his “concern” about the situation, and club president Joan Laporta has been unable to provide any reassurance to either the manager or the fans.

Barcelona are reportedly facing complications over negotiating a new deal for Lamine Yamal, with Liverpool and Manchester City closely monitoring the situation, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Yamal’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is described as being “cautious” about Barcelona potentially reneging on terms that have not yet been formalised, remaining “subject to review.”

Mendes has been burned by the club before after permanent deals for Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix fell through.

Barcelona plan to offer Yamal a contract that extends to 2030, with a salary that would place him at the “top of the squad’s wage scale.”

However, it remains uncertain whether the club has the financial capacity to meet these goals.

La Liga confirmed this week that the €100m VIP seating deal reportedly agreed by Barcelona for the end of 2024 was never included in the club’s financial statements.

“Neither on 31 December 2024, nor on 3 January 2025, nor today, does Barcelona have the margin to comply with financial fair play,” a statement from the league emphasised.
