Liverpool have agreed a £60m deal with Rennes to sign centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, with the move set to be completed on July 1.
The 20-year-old will sign a five-year contract at Anfield, with the option of a sixth, after the Reds beat Chelsea to his signature.
The deal includes an initial £55m fee plus £5m in add-ons, making Jacquet the second most expensive defender in the club’s history behind Virgil van Dijk.
Jacquet has been a regular for Rennes this season, starting 18 league matches, and recently travelled to the North West to complete his medical.
Sporting director Richard Hughes is understood to have led the negotiations. The signing is part of Liverpool’s long-term defensive planning, with the club continuing to lower the average age of the squad.
The transfer also represents a record sale for Rennes, surpassing the £55m deal that took Jeremy Doku to Manchester City in 2023.
Jeremy Jacquet has since expressed his excitement at joining “one of the greatest football institutions in the world” after choosing Liverpool over Chelsea.
Jacquet said: “I am honoured to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world. It was also very important for me to properly conclude my time in red and black, at the club that developed me – my boyhood club.
“I am approaching the second half of the season determined to share great moments with my teammates and the supporters.”
