Liverpool defender Joe Gomez set for lengthy spell out with hamstring injury

Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after tests confirmed a hamstring injury.

The 27-year-old was forced off in the 11th minute of Liverpool’s unexpected FA Cup defeat to Plymouth on Sunday.

Joe Gomez, who has made just 17 appearances this season under manager Arne Slot, will undergo further tests to determine the full extent of the damage and how long he will be out of action.

Liverpool were already without young midfielder Tyler Morton, who is struggling with a shoulder injury.

However, they were able to welcome back Trent Alexander-Arnold for the clash against Everton.

The right-back played the final half-hour after missing two games due to injury.

Ahead of the Everton match, Slot confirmed that Gomez’s latest injury is to the same leg that had previously troubled him during his earlier comeback.

Unfortunately, Gomez’s return was short-lived, as he lasted only 11 minutes before being forced off.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté started at centre-back for Liverpool against Everton, a pairing that was expected regardless of Gomez’s situation.

Despite a resilient performance, Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw after a late thunderous strike from James Tarkowski secured a point for the hosts.

“That will be a special moment for the rest of my career and probably the biggest moment for me really because to score like that is special,” centre-back Tarkowski said after the game.

“I’ve had a couple of promotions and playing for my country, but this is the biggest.

“With everything that’s happening right now, leaving this iconic stadium, a special stadium, it will be the biggest one of my career.

“It was mental. There were people grabbing me.

“I had an 80-year-old grabbing me and then a five-year-old kid pulling me to the floor, there were stewards everywhere, it was chaos, but it shows what a moment it is.

“With the occasion, it just feels special. I’m just pleased to be part of it.”
