Liverpool are in advanced talks to make Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong their first signing of the summer transfer window.
Negotiations are ongoing with the player’s representatives, with the Reds prepared to trigger Frimpong’s release clause, believed to be around £30million.
Frimpong, a right-sided player who can operate both as a full-back and wing-back for Leverkusen, is reportedly keen on a move to the newly crowned Premier League champions.
Following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s confirmation last week that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season on a free transfer, Liverpool are looking to strengthen their right-back options and provide competition for Conor Bradley.
The 24-year-old Dutch international has had an impressive season, contributing five goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances.
Last season, he recorded 26 goal contributions as Leverkusen secured the German league and cup double, while also reaching the Europa League final.
Leverkusen are being kept informed throughout the process but are expected to allow the sale if the release clause is activated.
Frimpong joined Leverkusen in 2021 after two successful years at Celtic, where he won the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup.
Additionally, Frimpong qualifies as a “homegrown” player under Premier League rules, having spent nearly a decade at Manchester City’s youth academy after joining them at the age of nine.
Notably, Frimpong was part of the Leverkusen team that suffered a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield during the Champions League group stage in November.
