Liverpool have reportedly emerged as strong contenders to sign Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella, potentially beating Manchester City to his signature.
City are expected to continue rebuilding their midfield this summer, following the likely departure of Kevin De Bruyne.
His exit will free up significant wages, which could be reinvested in another high-profile player.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are focused on improving their squad in preparation for what is almost certainly going to be a defense of their Premier League title next season.
As both teams brace for significant spending, La Gazzetta dello Sport highlights the possibility of a move for Barella, who is enjoying another stellar season in the heart of Inter’s midfield, helping them lead Serie A.
Pep Guardiola, the City boss, is a known admirer of Barella and is reported to be keen on bringing him to the Premier League this summer.
However, it’s Liverpool that is said to have the strongest interest at present.
Any move for Barella would come at a significant cost.
Inter are reportedly demanding over €100m (£86.5m) for the 28-year-old, who signed a new five-year contract with the club last summer, keeping him tied to the Italian giants until 2029.
There is also competition from Saudi Arabia, where Al Hilal is reportedly willing to offer a staggering €35m (£30.3m) per season to secure his services.
However, Barella is not thought to be interested in making the move.
In fact, Barella’s desire to leave Inter is virtually nonexistent.
He is thoroughly enjoying his time with the Nerazzurri and is expected to reject any offers that come his way this summer.
The midfielder is focused on continuing his development at Inter, where he has been given the platform to thrive.
He is also fully committed to leading the club in their pursuit of Champions League glory, with Simone Inzaghi’s side facing Bayern Munich in the second leg of their quarter-final tie, holding a narrow 2-1 advantage from the first leg.
