Liverpool have reportedly sounded out Xabi Alonso over the possibility of becoming their next head coach amid mounting pressure on Arne Slot.
Liverpool’s form has collapsed, with just four wins from their last 18 Premier League matches and no league victory since December 27 against Wolves.
Those wins came against Aston Villa, Brighton, nine-man Tottenham and bottom-of-the-table Wolves, underlining the scale of the downturn.
According to AS in Spain, Liverpool have contacted Alonso to assess his availability, though no decision has yet been made on Slot’s future. The club are understood to be gathering information before determining whether to act.
Alonso is said to be open to taking the role if offered, leaving Liverpool with a major decision as concerns grow over their chances of securing a top-five finish and Champions League qualification after a £400m summer spend.
Alonso has left his role as Real Madrid head coach after less than eight months in charge, with former Liverpool team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa named as his successor.
Real Madrid confirmed Alonso’s departure by mutual consent before announcing Arbeloa’s promotion from the club’s B team. The decision follows the Spanish Super Cup defeat to Barcelona.
Alonso, 44, replaced Carlo Ancelotti last summer after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024.
He won 24 of his 34 matches in charge, but pressure mounted after a recent loss to Celta Vigo, which saw his side booed off and prompted an emergency board meeting.
Real also suffered a 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid earlier this season and were beaten by both Liverpool and Manchester City in the Champions League.
