Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic explains decision to join Las Palmas on loan

Stefan Bajcetic has opened up about his decision to join Las Palmas on loan from Liverpool, following the early termination of his season-long loan to Red Bull Salzburg.

The Spanish midfielder made 19 appearances for the Austrian side after reuniting with former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

However, the 20-year-old started only eight times, and his future became uncertain after Lijnders was dismissed at the start of the Austrian winter break in mid-December.

Stefan Bajcetic was an unused substitute in Salzburg’s match against Real Madrid during new head coach Thomas Letsch’s first game in charge.

He then made a brief appearance in their 4-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, coming on in the 85th minute.

That proved to be Bajcetic’s final appearance for Salzburg before completing his loan move to Las Palmas last Friday.

The midfielder could make his debut for the Spanish club on Monday night when they travel to Girona.

Eager to return to his homeland, Bajcetic explained that he sees Las Palmas as the “best option” for his development, citing the club’s strong track record of providing opportunities to loanees.

“It was important that the players on loan are also playing and increasing their value here,” he explained at his unveiling.

“Las Palmas is a team that plays good football and gives opportunities to players who come on loan.

“I hope there will be some for me too.

“Considering things, it was the best option for me, I want to grow as a footballer.

“I think I can improve here.

“I spoke with the coach (Diego Martinez) before signing, and from the start, he gave me a lot of confidence.

“He is also from Vigo, like me.

“He asked me to bring the attitude I have from my ‘Serbian side’.

“To come with attitude and commitment, and I told him that will not be lacking.”

He continued: “I’m ready to play right away. If the coach gives me the chance, I’ll be there.

“As a kid, I always played as a centre-back, but when I came to Liverpool I moved to central midfield.

“That’s where I feel most comfortable.

“I follow La Liga and watched the last game against Osasuna. can bring energy, desire and youth.

“I see that Las Palmas have been doing well recently.

“With the new coach and the new signings, things have improved.

“They are a well-made team.

“I can bring youth, character and a desire to improve.

“I want to continue with my career and I really want to play in Spain.

“Las Palmas gave me that opportunity.”
