Liverpool are reportedly offering “important money” in an effort to beat Paris Saint-Germain to the signing of Yan Diomande this summer, with the RB Leipzig winger emerging as a top target.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool are “really pushing” to secure a deal for the highly-rated youngster, while PSG remain interested but are currently “in the background.”
The Reds are understood to be keen to strengthen their attacking options and view Diomande as a player with significant long-term potential. Talks are ongoing as Liverpool look to gain an advantage in the race for his signature.
“Both clubs are still in the mix. Liverpool are really pushing, really insisting to make it happen,” Romano explained on YouTube.
“For Liverpool he’s a top, top priority. They are offering important money to the player to get it done.
“On the other side, PSG are also keen, but it depends on what happens with Barcola, Goncalo Ramos, Lee Kang-in.
“There are players who have to leave PSG, while at the same time Liverpool already made some space with Mo Salah leaving.
“At the moment the understanding is Liverpool are really pushing, PSG are still there in the background.”
RB Leipzig value Yan Diomande at around €130million (£112.4m) after an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga following his move from Leganés last summer.
The German club are also keen to secure the winger’s long-term future and are continuing efforts to agree a new contract that would keep him at the club for at least another season under head coach Ole Werner.
“Let’s wait and see, but it is for sure eventually going to be a very expensive transfer, because Leipzig want to keep the player one more season,” Romano continued.
“Leipzig still hope to offer him a new contract – better salary, release clause, leave in one year – so let’s see what happens.”
It had previously been reported that Diomande was keen to resolve his future before the World Cup, with Ivory Coast scheduled to begin their campaign against Ecuador on June 15.
Whether that remains achievable is unclear, however, as Leipzig’s €130million (£112.4m) valuation and their determination to keep the 19-year-old are proving significant obstacles in negotiations.
Liverpool remain interested, but any deal is likely to require substantial progress in the coming days if it is to be completed before the tournament.
