Liverpool are poised to agree a loan move for youngster Jayden Danns as the transfer window draws to a close.
Danns has impressed since progressing through the ranks at Anfield and made history last Wednesday by becoming the youngest player in Liverpool’s history to start a Champions League match when he lined up against PSV.
The 19-year-old forward has made four senior appearances this season, scoring once in the FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley.
With the teenager eager for more game-time, Liverpool have decided to sanction a loan for the remainder of the season.
Several clubs have shown interest in acquiring Danns on loan, with manager Arne Slot confirming last week that discussions were ongoing.
Now, with only a few hours left before the window closes, the deal appears to be nearing completion.
According to The Athletic, Sunderland are currently leading the race for the Liverpool youngster.
Other Championship clubs have also expressed interest in bringing the 19-year-old in on loan.
However, the Black Cats are now considered the favorites to secure Danns for the rest of the campaign.
With Slot possessing a wealth of attacking options, it has been determined that a loan move is the best opportunity for Danns to gain more experience.
Sunderland have enjoyed an outstanding first season under manager Régis Le Bris.
They are currently fourth in the Championship table, comfortably holding onto a play-off spot and sitting 11 points clear of seventh-place Middlesbrough.
Wilson Isidor is Sunderland’s first-choice striker, having netted nine goals this season. Danns will likely provide competition for the Frenchman at the Stadium of Light.
If the deal goes through on deadline day, Danns could make his debut for Sunderland in their match against Watford on Saturday.
However, with Le Bris’ side traveling to Middlesbrough on Monday night, Danns will not be registered in time to feature.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot confirmed last week that discussions were ongoing regarding the futures of several young players, but he kept an open mind about whether they could still play a role for the Reds this season.
“These are also ongoing discussions we have. You know how it is in football. Yesterday can be different than today or tomorrow. I can give you a certain answer and, of course, we’re not hoping this is going to happen,” Slot said.
“But if I leave the training pitch and there are three injuries along the training session then it’s going to be a different answer.
“It’s a process we are discussing a lot about.
“These decisions will be made and will be pushed towards the end of the window, which is almost there.”
