Man United enquire about Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen amid goalkeeper concerns

Manchester United have reportedly made enquiries regarding a potential move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

This interest in a Premier League rival’s shot-stopper comes as criticism continues to mount over the performances of Andre Onana.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper failed to silence Nemanja Matic’s claim that he is “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history” with a series of errors in Thursday’s Europa League tie against Lyon.

Onana was culpable for both goals United conceded in a 2-2 draw, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of next week’s decisive second leg at Old Trafford.

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim has insisted he remains “really confident” in the team’s current number one, but reports suggest the club is contemplating a move for a new goalkeeper this summer.

Bart Verbruggen, Brighton’s first-choice goalkeeper, is the latest name to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport claims that United have “asked for information” on the Dutch international.

However, their pursuit is likely to be complicated by rival interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

If Brighton are forced to sell, Verbruggen could command a fee in the region of £60m.

That hefty price tag, which would make Verbruggen the third-most expensive goalkeeper of all time, may be beyond United’s revised budget.

Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, priced between €15m (£12.6m) and €25m (£20.9m), is a more affordable target, although Arsenal are believed to be leading the race for the Spaniard’s signature.

Other options reportedly under consideration include Royal Antwerp’s young Belgian talent, Senne Lammens, while there has even been speculation about a potential return for David de Gea, following a successful season with Fiorentina.

Onana, for his part, is reportedly unwilling to fade into the background.

The Cameroon international is expected to fight for his place at United for the remainder of the season and throughout the summer.
