Manchester City are accelerating their pursuit of AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders ahead of their upcoming trip to the Club World Cup, according to the Daily Mail.
Reijnders, who has enjoyed a stellar season in Serie A, is expected to command a transfer fee exceeding £55million this summer.
The Netherlands international has impressed with 15 goals across all competitions this term and was recently named Serie A’s Midfielder of the Year.
Despite his success, AC Milan fans have expressed frustration over the club’s disappointing campaign and voiced concerns about the potential sale of Tijjani Reijnders.
Pep Guardiola is keen to strengthen City’s midfield but has emphasised that while he provides input on squad changes, the club ultimately makes the final decisions.
In the club’s management, Hugo Viana is set to take over as director of football from Txiki Begiristain.
Meanwhile, City are also reportedly interested in Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who recently earned a call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad.
Although Guardiola suggested that a major overhaul is unlikely, City are thought to be targeting at least one full-back, with Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri a long-term target, alongside a couple of midfield additions.
The futures of players such as Ederson and Matheus Nunes remain uncertain, and Guardiola confirmed that Jack Grealish could be on his way out.
These potential departures are likely to influence City’s transfer activity in the coming window.
“I don’t have any doubts that with Rodri there and Phil (Foden) there, we would have competed (this year),’ Guardiola said after they secured Champions League qualification.
“I’m not saying we would have won because Liverpool deserved to win, but we would have been better. What happens next season the club is going to decide.
“I give my suggestions but the club will decide. That is not the most important thing, the most important thing is how we create our connection and vibes between all of us to go and compete everywhere.
“We will be better and I will try. We will be closer. This season we have done 71 points – miles away from our standards in the past.”
